The Dropshipping Business Model

Dropshipping is a retail fulfilment method in which a company does not hold inventory of the items it sells. When a dropshipping store offers a product, it buys it from a third party (a manufacturer, wholesaler, or another retailer) who then distributes it to the buyer directly.

To summarise it in basic steps, this is how the business model works:

  1. Find a product to sell
  2. Build a website
  3. Drive traffic to the website
  4. When you achieve a sale, your supplier should send it directly to your customer.

This means, that you generally never need to hold stock or ship the product yourself.

The benefits of utilizing a business model, like the dropshipping business model, is that it has lower startup costs. Has scalability potential, lower inventory management, and more. You're essentially able to offer new products immediately or stop selling slow-moving products, as you don't hold stock of the product

However, on the other end, a drawback here is that you don't control your supplier's inventory. So in reality, if they run out of stock, you also run out of stock and need to make a haste decision to move forwards. This could potentially lead to increased lead times and potentially, lost customers.

Moreover, the primary benefit we can clearly identify is that we're able to build an online business with no requirement to purchase and hold the inventory.
